Frequently asked questions
What are the load ratings for your manhole covers?
Our manhole covers meet BS EN 124 standards, covering load classes A15 to F900. Not sure which one you need? Give us a call at 01905 774927 for expert advice!
How do I correctly measure for a manhole cover / frame?
Measure the internal opening (length × width) of the hole you want to cover — do not measure the old frame or cover itself. For example, a 600×450 mm hole requires a 600×450 mm cover (or slightly larger). If in doubt, send photos and measurements of the hole you need to cover and we’ll confirm.

What is a recessed manhole cover, and when would I use one?
A recessed cover has a tray to allow for infilling (e.g. paving, screed, tiles, resin) so that the cover sits flush with the finished surface. They are ideal when the surrounding surface (paving, slab, resin) needs to match, and you want a seamless finish.
Can you supply non-standard or bespoke sizes?
Absolutely. We specialise in bespoke manhole covers. If your opening is non-standard, send us drawings, dimensions, or photos, and we'll provide a quote to manufacture to your specification.
What are manhole covers?
A manhole cover is a protective lid used to cover drainage, sewer and inspection chambers. They provide safe access for maintenance while preventing accidents, odours and debris entering the system.
What is a recessed manhole cover?
A recessed manhole cover is a steel or aluminium cover with a tray that can be filled with gravel, block paving, turf or concrete. It is designed to blend with the surrounding surface, making it ideal for gardens, patios and driveways.
How does a recessed manhole cover work?
Recessed covers sit within a frame and have a tray that holds finishing materials. The tray lifts out using lifting keys, allowing access to the chamber below. The frame supports the load and keeps the cover aligned and secure.
What type of manhole cover do I need?
You need to select the best cover based on:
- Load rating (pedestrian, driveway, heavy vehicle)
- Location (garden, patio, driveway, road)
- Material (steel, ductile iron, aluminium)
- Size (clear opening of the chamber)
- Finish (recessed, solid top, sealed, locking)

Why do I need a manhole cover?
Manhole covers ensure safety, prevent falls, keep out debris, stop odours escaping and allow controlled access for drainage maintenance.
Should a manhole cover be sealed?
Sealed covers are recommended for internal areas, garages, utility rooms, or anywhere odours may escape. Outdoor covers often don’t require full sealing unless drainage smells are an issue.
What is the British Standard for manhole covers?
Manhole covers typically conform to BS EN 124 load classes:
- A15 – Pedestrian / garden areas
- B125 – Driveways / car parks
- C250 / D400 – Roads and heavy traffic areas

How can I disguise a manhole cover outside?
Use a recessed cover filled with the same material as your patio, gravel or turf. This hides the cover while maintaining full access. For turf you will need a 100mm deep cover to allow for a deep enough bed of soil for the grass to grow.
Do manhole covers come with or need a frame?
Yes. All manhole covers must sit inside a compatible frame. The frame provides support, determines the size and ensures the cover cannot move or fall in.
My manhole cover has broken. What do I do?
A broken or unstable cover should be replaced immediately. Measure the clear opening, choose the correct load rating, and fit a new cover and frame to ensure safety.

Where can I buy a manhole cover?
You can buy manhole covers directly from MCD Company at www.mcdcompany.co.uk, where we stock recessed covers, driveway covers, aluminium covers, and sealed internal access covers.
How to install a recessed manhole cover?
Installation is straightforward:
- ensure the frame is level and properly supported,
- bed the frame securely in concrete,
- infill the tray with your chosen surface while keeping it flush with the surrounding area,
- allow the bedding and infill to cure fully before use.
